School Visits

Wednesday 25th November 2015:
Today we took part in the formal visitor programme for the Manaiakalani project.  There were approximately 50 people present today (from far and wide - including representatives from local councils, primary, Intermediate, Secondary, and Tertiary providers).  There were 10 student representatives from the 12 schools in the cluster who spoke to the group.  The project is also supporting some outreach clusters and many of these schools were also present.

1) The day started with us learning about the Manaikalani way: Learn, Create, Share learning.

2) Student representatives shared some of their learning with us.  Of interest was:

3) The project leader Dorothy Burt then briefed us a little more on the project.  Points of interest were:

  • The future focused learning approach in connection with communities.  Clustering is important – community of learners
  • 2500 students in cluster
  • Linking tradition to technology and science
  • Ancient wisdom applied to new technology
  • Technology is business as usual in the digital world. The pencil has been replaced
  • Ipad (years 1-3) Chromebook (years 4-13)
  • Picture of jumping – moving from old to new world you need to just jump. Can’t stand with one foot on either side (high diving board). 1st year landing and crouching
  • Academic data could have a real shudder – look at research from around the world
  • Whanau included right from the beginning
  • Every government contract that came along was an opportunity to keep going
  • Whole cluster Learn, Create, Share, reflect (connected, empowered, ubiquitous) but each school unpacks it in their own way – gives schools own autonomy. Learning should be visible – the default is public!
  • Every teacher becomes a website designer! Learners should be able to go to the blog and catch up on where they should be
  • All learning and planning goes up online
  • Locking parents out of learning journey if you password protect and don’t make visible
  • Visible teaching, learning, planning!
  • Hapara Teacher dashboard – trial with our project group.  Parent portal – can see children’s learning in real time
  • Outreach clusters – supporting 5 schools (7 must dos in the clusters)
  • Share wi-fi from schools to put internet in to homes

Community driving change

Russell Burt - Why Outreach?

Investors Introduction:

It was wonderful to visit Tamaki College and be hosted by the Deputy Principal Russell Dunn.  It was a great time to visit and we got to witness a fabulous initiative the school have implemented by collapsing the timetable and jump starting the year 10 students in to NCEA Level one programmes in last two weeks of term.

Key points of interest for us were:
  • Every teacher has a google site
  • Teacher planning was visible to everyone so students can self-regulate
  • Teachers email students regularly or put work on their google site
  • Devices gives students control
  • There are lots of parent meetings with students showing their Whanau how they use devices
  • The school have dismantled some computer rooms and distributed these computers across the school in to classrooms (generally 5 computers per class)
  • Engagement of online exams is good and school have been trialing online exams for 3 years.  Website locked down until exam time
  • The use of teacher dashboard monitors in action was fantastic ($6 a student teacher dashboard)
  • Apple lab, pc lab, and specialised labs
  • Any student in the area can access wifi from any nearby cluster school
  • The use of Linewise - giving access to students as teachers
  • The Geek cafe - 3 hrs each week on a wed. 3 students each week work in cafe and hospitality students make coffee. Community come in and use as a paid service to get help with things. Students paid with things like stylus pens etc at end of term

Thursday 26th November 2015:

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Orewa College.  We were hosted by Linda Rubens and Mark Quigley who willingly shared their experiences, tips, and pearls of wisdom heading in to the digital world.  We were also fortunate to see some blog examples, be introduced to some helpful apps, talk to some students, and a few teachers.

Key points of interest for us were:
  • The school use Ultranet is Orewa College's Learning Management System LMS. This is the place where teachers put information, resources, assessments, etc for their students and it can be accessed from any computer with internet access.  Because it is the central learning point for the school, this is also the main point of access for members of the Orewa College community, ie parents, students, staff, so any information you want about the College, from this point of view can be found on Ultranet rather than on our website which is the public face of the college. Information on Ultranet includes: Exam Timetable, Careers Information, Course Information, Daily Notices, School Calendar, High Tide Weekly Newsletter, Watermark, etc
  • The school recommends an Ipad 2 for the students, however students are permitted to bring other devices, provided they are internet capable.
  • The school outsource their technical support to Conrad Stewart from Isometrics
  • School uses Turn It In as a Programme to check Student Authenticity and Plagiarism
  • Common thread to Manaiakalani Project - Make it the School of choice
  • All use Word Press as the Blog of Choice
  • All Teacher PLC is on Word Press Blogs and a template is established to make it easier for teachers (this is a cut and paste code that enables the template to set itself up)
  • Some staff have Macbooks, others have PCs
